I-Der Calligraphy Society
Twenty-Fifth Anniversary Exhibition
-The Special Collection from The Discourse of Vegetable Roots-

I-Der Calligraphy Society has been established for 25 years. The Society 's members may not be renowned scholars or master calligraphers, but they are all diligent lovers of calligraphy. They have been pursuing the advancements of their artistry of calligraphy for more than nine thousands days.

Mr. Chin-Lin Huang is the instructor for the members of the Society. He emphasizes the training of the both brush writing technique and the inspiration of the mind, because in essence, Calligraphy is an abstract art. During the writing and the movement of the brush, the calligrapher should experience the peace, the beauty, and the virtue. The viewer of the calligraphy work should also observe the styles and manners of the calligrapher. We wish to realize the value of life and living via calligraphy as part of the popular culture in our modern Society.

The I-Der Calligraphy hosts two exhibitions every year in Taipei, and additional roving exhibition throughout Taiwan, as well as Kinman and Japan. So far the Society has produced 27 exhibitions and published 8 volumes of its members' artworks. The members of the Society gather regularly to practice and encourage each other, and immerse themselves in the artistic world of calligraphy. There are more than 30 members of the Society who are participating this exhibition and 10 of these participating members have held their individual exhibitions before.

To reflect our worry of the lack of virtue and ethic standards in current Society, our members decided to use the book "The Discourse of Vegetable Roots" by Ying-Ming Hong from the Ming Dynasty as the text and common theme of our brush writing artworks for this 25th anniversary exhibition. We are hoping the visitors of this exhibition not only can appreciate the art of calligraphy we present to you, but also can reflect on the teaching of the text written to bring out their inner virtues to the betterment of their own lives.
